India Travels- Ashram recap

Feb. 3rd, 2010

Journal Entry:
"We checked into a nice hotel in Madurai today, thank you Travis for the foresight of knowing we would need intermittent nice places throughout our trip to make things a little easier for a few days. We need this place to rest, re-connect and eat. The ashram was hard for me and I was legitimately "running" across the bridge the night of our train ride, to get away from that cult-y place. Looking back, the views were amazing, and it probably wouldn't have been that bad, but it gave me the creeps, and I wasn't allowed to show any affection or sleep in the same bed as Travis, (two small twin beds adorned the room, and it was specifically requested that no funny business go on so people could focus on their meditation. Something I totally get, though, I needed a good cuddle in that place is all I'm saying.) the lunch/dinner plates were barely washed that we ate from (they were washed by people with ash and then re-used immediately however well washed or not by the next person, the nurse's daughter in me cringing) the women walking around were all Travis' "type"(hippies with long flowy hair and garments- to which I felt equal jealousy, and weird "Big Love"(Polygamist-mormom show on TV) creepiness from) and all these people were worshipping a person, which is totally against everything I have believed my whole life. I felt like telling this guru to be more humble, don't have people pushing themselves in line, acting crazy, for a person! You are not God!... Ok, I'll stop.

Because of all these feeling of mine, and Travis' totally valid feelings in the contrary, we fought. Well, not because of the ashram, but because I had 2 hours of sleep both nights, was feeling really vulnerable from being at the ashram, generally feeling wiped from being in India, and then there was a triggering incident, with a rooftop display, and some sssshhhh'ing, which I hate, and I blew up. I walked away, and didn't speak to him all day. It was good for me to get space, it didn't feel like the last time where I wanted to leave, just that I needed space from this person I had been spending 24 hours w/ for weeks. I called my parents for the 1st time since I'd been in India, had a nice but short convo with them, told them all about India so far, and then proceeded to cry about it being hard here and me being home sick. I wish I could be more tough sometimes, but India is hard and I am trying my best. My parents were reassuring and sweet. After the phone call I had a full day: I ate and then saw and got my new Italian (funny, great) friend's facebook, helped move a thousand or so pamphlets, emailed, sat outside by the river, slept, read. And then I woke up from sleeping and saw Travis had gone to eat without me (as he should have). I got really sad that I was acting this way and that he wasn't there. I went and found him in the waves of people and sat by him to eat. We had a nonchalant talk on the beach, he went to volunteer, I went to volunteer, and by dinner it was quiet but a little better. But with another sleepless night, I broke down, telling him we weren't right for each other, etc. He just let me talk, said maybe we weren't and let me cry alone. Once we got to Madurai to a clean, safe hotel, all my anxiety melted away. We ate, napped, showered (warm water!), talked, napped, ate, woke up in the AM and were completely in love. We had talked it through and I need to work on being less jealous, for sure, but I told him it was more, I needed to be looked after in that "creepy" place and I felt abandoned... We held each other that day, ate and rested, and everything felt possible again."

Email from home:

" Hi Briana, I was thinking after you called that you should not underestimate the magnitude of what you are doing. You are traveling to a place that under the very best of conditions is quite difficult to endure...By everyone's account, it is one of the toughest places on earth to visit. You are staying for a very long time to be away from home and the things that you are used to and that give you comfort, even if you don't realize it at the time. It's hard enough to be away for a week or two, let alone a month. I always feel that way when I am in Ecuador, but even western Europe because it is just different from what we are used to, out of our "comfort zone". You are spending 24/7 with someone - absolutely every minute of every day - again something you are not used to.... So even though Travis is your love, it still leaves you with no recharge time at all. So no wonder you are having a tough time! (In reference to a wonderful Italian woman I met who said her "English was catastrophic", to which I responded, "If your English was catastrophic you would not know that word!" haha) And if you run into more Italians, use the English word "sub-optimal" for things that are catastrophically not right. That is Attilio's favorite word in that situation." -I love you, Dad

The bridge to 'safety', haha

Journal entry:

(side note: it's hard to write a blog after the fact because you start to idealize your trip, and only want to share the good things. I debated whether or not to share my journal entry, and not just my happy, positive email, because it portrays 'Negative Briana', someone who always has something to complain about, on this trip and throughout lif
e. While it is true that India is a hard place to travel, and I felt tired, hungry and agitated a lot of the trip, it seems silly now to write about those things because I have so many wonderful memories to share. In the end, I have decided to share my entry, because I want to express the whole truth: about me, about India (in case you decide to journey there). Maybe in expressing the whole truth I will start to come out of my negative shell and look at the blessings I have in my life in the future and in future writing...??)

"We've been in Goa for a day and a 1/2 now. It was a beautiful drive into our first beach town, Calangute, about an hour from the airport. Colorful houses, palm
trees, open land. Travis was so excited yesterday, jubilant, that he had found his next place to live. He was picturing a colorful house with a garden, riding around on Mopeds, maybe even going home during the Monsoon season. I got nervous thinking about living in India, even if it was Goa!? 'Maybe we could paint our house in the US/Canada a bright color and have a garden there?' haha
Today was a little different. We got scammed again. A
t the beach we thought the people who worked at the cafe where we sat on lounge chairs were just being friendly, chatting. In actuality the 2 ladies, Fatima and ?, were selling massages and the guy from 'the mountains' was selling hand carved elephants and things that 'he carved himself.' (Every store we proceeded to go into the rest of our trip had these hand carved pieces, and it became a running joke that we 'knew the artist who made all these') It was just hard because we were asking him questions, he was telling us about his family, and in the end all it was was a big scam. Sigh. I'm sticky and dirty from this humidity."

The beautiful drive into Goa:

In case you've never seen it, this is Travis' 'smirker' face! I do anything I can to see this face. I love it when my sweetie is happy. He's falling in love with goa here...

What colorful houses!

Open fields:

Waiting for the bus?

The first hotel we stayed at in Goa:

It had a pool!

And we played pool by that pool...

And then we proceeded to drink by the pool..

Kingfisher of course..

'For sale in Goa only'

'Our Lady of ... Pray For Us'!

Then we slept

We showered in the same room as we went to the bathroom in, and the same room we washed our clothes in the bucket(the bucket is for washing yourself in India, showering washing, and going #2 washing...but we put that out of our minds and washed our clothes in said bucket) , and the same room we brushed our teeth in...

rooftop rainwater collector I think

Beautiful tree and flowers on road to beach

Beach Moments:

Indian healer

dog getting shade!

Russian Belly :)

B on the Beach

On the beach and on the way back from the beach, cows!

Things for sale:

And yes, this guy was 'for sale' or rather his impromptu decorated cow dancing on top of his chest act was for sale, in front of our hotel when we were leaving, wanting money for said services and of course because I took a picture.

India Travels- Paris

Jan. 11/12, 2010

Journal Entry:

"Sitting at the Paris airport, waiting for our flight to Mumbai. 'Travis says hi'. He can't stand it if I am not paying attention to him, haha. He is so cute. We've had a crazy several hours. Flying to Paris, finding our way through the airport, walking out into the freezing cold Paris winter with only our India summer clothes on, taking the shuttle to our hotel (hoping it's the right shuttle), trying to check in speaking French, only to have the guy speak back to us in English, finding a restaurant, it being over-priced, going to the bar instead and splitting a grilled cheese... Needless to say doing all of this jet lagged seemed a lot harder than it really should have been.

It's funny
to be constantly aware of money, trying not to spend too much, trying to stretch our trip longer. I have even been using coins in the U.S. and France, making every cent count.
Holiday Inn was unusually expensive, but I guess near an airport that is what you will get. And it was nice to have a comfortable bed to sleep in and one last bath to shave my legs in before the unknown of sleeping and bathing in India. We were up by 3 am when neither of us could fain sleep any longer.

It's so touristy to be sitting here in the airport writin
g in my 'travel journal', but it will be worth it to have a written documentary of our adventures!

It's about half and half at our gate, we are not the only 'whities' (as I will dub people throughout our trip who look like they may come from an English speaking country, not politically correct, but an easy abbreviation when conversing with Travis only). I am sure some people are American, or maybe most are French, though I did see one guy with a backpack with a Canadian Flag on it. Not sure if they do that for National Pride, or as Travis says, 'To distinguish themselves from Americans because 'you guys' have a bad reputation traveling and abroad'! ha!

We will arrive at midnight in Mumbai and probably won't see the chaos until we wake up and have to change hotels. Sigh. It is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time....!

Briana, showered, drinking hot tea, jet lagged and starting to read Shantaram, http://www.shantaram.com/, thank you Nikki!

Travis looking bright and happy, excited to be in Paris and for our India adventure.

India Travels- The LA Adventure

Jan. 6-10th, 2010

Journal Entries:

"..I woke up feeling nervous and vulnerable that I don't have a real job, nor have I had one for months... I hustled enough to be able to pay my car payment while I am gone, as well as have a little to help.. but I haven't worked (other than freelance jobs, including one for my mom;) in so long, that I feel vulnerable, useless and incompetent..."
"..On a correlating note, I started looking into grad school, and want to become a professor! Something about rummaging thro
ugh all your old high school AP notes, and college essays will make you jump back to a hopeful stance. A Green MBA sounds nice, and will help me have a steady, rewarding profession that can allow me to take care of my family. And one day even take Travis on a trip!"

"...other than waiting for UPS guys that never come, Travis and I have had a really loving pre-adventure. We've b
een doing cheesy stuff like holding hands, cuddling, dancing and singing to music on his laptop. We have sparse resources here. Natalie's blow-up bed, no towels/pillows, etc., but a few bowls, one cup and $20 worth of groceries... The simple life of two people in love. So cheezy!.."

"..doubting.. coughing... errands... crossword puzzles... ornery moods between both of us..."

"..Went to see Avatar (http://www.avatarmovie.com/) last night, it was a pretty amazing movie with a wonderful
message about interconnectedness and protecting our planet. Travis loved the movie and raved about it on our 30 min. walk home from the ArcLight. It inspired him to want to work for GreenPeace..."

"Today we are leaving. Jacquelyn is going to pick us up and take us to Air France!... we have a lot of last minute things to do: mailing my cell phone home (will be weird to be without a phone for months), wash a few clo
thes, unplug fridge, clean up... And then we are going to India!.. we even got fake wedding rings so I won't get as harrassed..haha"
